If you have already received one and took the bait, call your bank immediately to report the fraudulent transaction and ask what you need to do in order to get your money back. Many of the spam emails using Norton, LifeLock, or NortonLifeLock names include offers with fake links to buy or renew antivirus or other security services. If you receive an email that looks anything like this you’ll know right away that it’s a scam.

But in one Martin County case, the scam was thwarted. The email will say that the victim’s Norton account has been shut down or they are due a 199.00 refund.

Victims have received fake emails that appear to be from Norton Anti-Virus, a popular anti-virus software program. What the scammers are counting on here is the recipient being confused/naïve enough to think they really do owe the money so they call the 800 number and pay the fee.Īnd unfortunately, there’s no doubt that lots of people do fall for it (they always do). A new scam called the Norton Antivirus Refund Scam is making the rounds, preying on senior citizens. Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Investigators are currently working a nationwide scam that is operating in our area. (Just type the number into Google and you’ll see who it actually belongs to – DON’T call the number!) That alone is iron-clad proof that the email is a scam as the Norton company would never use a free email service like Gmail to send out official emails.ģ – The toll free number they ask you to call IS NOT a Norton phone number. It simply reads “Billing Team” instead of Norton.Ģ – The email was sent from a Gmail address. There are several tip-offs in this message that indicate it’s a scam:ġ – There is no company name in the “From” field.

These fraudulent messages vary a slight bit, but the ones I’ve seen look something like this: Maybe the biggest name in antivirus and protection software, Norton Security gets a lot right, though for some reason just has to install an annoying toolbar and browser. Several people have forwarded what appear to be email invoices for Norton products and services they supposedly ordered, but didn’t.Īs you can probably guess, each and every one of those emails have turned out to be scams. We verified with Norton direct that it was a scam, the individual we talked to was not employed by Norton, and his phone was connected to a fraud ring in.
